Who it is for

Is this pregnancy blood test right for you?

When a pregnancy begins, the body starts producing the hormone hCG. It is released into the blood first and reaches the urine only later — which is why laboratories and hospitals test blood. A pregnancy blood test you do at home uses the same approach and gives you an answer in five minutes. People choose it when they want to know:

  • Earlier than a urine test can tell: from about 10 days after conception
  • At any time of day, with no need for first-morning urine
  • Without worrying how much they drank beforehand
  • With the method laboratories use

Why earlier matters. A pregnancy means changes from the first weeks: no alcohol, no smoking, a review of medicines and certain foods. The sooner you know, the sooner you can act.

  • A late periodAnd you want a clear answer today
  • Trying to conceiveTest about 10 days after conception
  • Irregular cyclesWhen counting days is not reliable
  • A doubtful urine testA faint or unclear line that needs a second opinion

Blood or urine

Why a blood test shows a pregnancy earlier

The pregnancy hormone hCG is made in the placenta. It is released into the blood first and passes into the urine only later. A test on blood therefore reaches the detection level sooner than a test on urine.

Illustration: hCG reaches the detection level in blood from about day 10 after conception, and in urine about a week after a missed period
The curves are an illustration. This test detects hCG from 25 IU/L.
  • EarlierA blood test can show a pregnancy from about 10 days after conception; a urine test about one week after a missed period
  • At any time of dayThere is no need to wait for first-morning urine
  • Not affected by drinkingThe amount you drink can dilute hCG in urine. It does not affect a blood test
  • The method laboratories useLaboratories and hospitals widely test blood for pregnancy

What it measures

What this pregnancy blood test tells you, and what it does not

It tells you

  • Whether the hCG in your blood is at 25 IU/L or above (WHO reference), which means you are pregnant
  • From about 10 days after conception, earlier than a urine test
  • From a fingertip blood sample, in five minutes, at any time of day

It does not tell you

  • How many weeks pregnant you are
  • Whether the pregnancy is developing normally. That is for your doctor or midwife
  • Anything reliable within 8 weeks of a birth, a miscarriage or an abortion: hCG can still be in the body
  • Anything reliable if you take a medicine that contains hCG, or have certain medical conditions that produce it

How it works

Five steps, about ten minutes

  1. Patris Health Pregnancy Blood Test – step 1, twisting the grey protective cap off the lancet

    01

    Prepare the lancet

Very important: do not touch the trigger. Twist the grey protective cap off, never pull it. Keep turning until it comes away.

  2. Patris Health Pregnancy Blood Test – step 2, drawing a drop of blood from the fingertip with the pipette

    02

Take a blood sample from your fingertip

Very important: use the pipette correctly — lightly touch the drop of blood with the pipette’s tip, not the skin, do not squeeze the bulb, fill to the line.

  3. Patris Health Pregnancy Blood Test – step 3, releasing the blood from the pipette into the sample well

    03

Put the blood into the sample well

Press the pipette bulb to release the blood into the sample well. Then wait 30 to 40 seconds until it is absorbed.

  4. Patris Health Pregnancy Blood Test – step 4, adding four drops of diluent to the sample well

    04

Add exactly 4 drops of diluent

Very important: add the diluent only after the 30 to 40 seconds. Hold the vial upright and add exactly four drops, 2–3 seconds apart.

  5. Patris Health Pregnancy Blood Test – step 5, test device after the reading time

    05

Read the result after 5 minutes

Not after 10. Set a timer.

Instructions for useWatch the video demonstration

On the clock: the five minutes, step by step

  1. Drop in

Blood from the pipette into the sample well.

  2. Wait, then diluent

Not before 30–40 seconds. Then exactly four drops, 2–3 seconds apart.

  3. Colour moves

Lines begin to form. Not readable yet.

  4. Read

Read the result now, in good light.

  5. Stop

Do not interpret the result after 10 minutes.

Your result

How to read your pregnancy blood test result

Two lines means you are pregnant. One line means the test did not detect a pregnancy. A faint second line still counts as a line. The pictures below show each result.

  • Pregnancy Blood Home Test result window, two lines, at C and at T: pregnant

    Pregnant positive

Both C and T lines are visible. hCG is at 25 IU/L or above.

  • Pregnancy Blood Home Test result window, one line at C, no line at T: most likely not pregnant

    Most likely not pregnant negative

Only the C line is visible. hCG is below 25 IU/L.

  • Pregnancy Blood Home Test result window, no line at C: invalid

    Invalid repeat

No C line. The result cannot be read. This happens most often when the diluent is added before the blood has been absorbed. Repeat with a new test and a fresh blood sample, and wait the full 30 to 40 seconds before you add the diluent.

A faint T line still counts as a line — the colour and intensity of the lines do not matter, only that they are homogeneous and clearly visible. Read at 5 minutes; do not interpret the result after 10. The pictures are for illustration purposes; the actual lines may differ in intensity.

Next step

What to do with your result

If the test is positive

Make an appointment with your doctor or gynaecologist to confirm the pregnancy and discuss the next steps. Early prenatal care matters. Until then, avoid alcohol and smoking, and ask before taking any medicine.

If the test is negative

You are most probably not pregnant. If you may have miscounted, or your cycle is irregular, and your period has not started within a week, repeat the test. If it is negative again and your period still has not come, see your doctor: there can be other reasons for the delay.

The technology

What happens inside the test device

All of it happens on a paper strip inside the test device, in five minutes.

  1. The sample moves

The drop of blood and the diluent travel along the strip by capillary action. No pump, no power.

  2. Antibodies find hCG

The test uses a specific pair of antibodies that detect the pregnancy hormone hCG in the blood.

  3. The T line

Above 25 IU/L, a coloured line appears at T. Below that, none.

  4. The C line

A line at C means the test worked. No C line, no result.

It gives one answer — above or below the threshold — not a number.

Questions

Asked before ordering

How accurate is a pregnancy blood test at home compared with the laboratory?+

In the evaluation studies, the test agreed with laboratory reference methods in 100 % of cases (95 % CI 96.16–100 %). The laboratory reports an hCG number; this test tells you whether you are at or above 25 IU/L. No test is perfect: false results are possible, which is why a positive is confirmed by your doctor.

Does the finger prick hurt?+

It is a brief prick. Wash your hands with warm water first, massage the finger towards the tip for 10 to 15 seconds, and prick the side of the fingertip. The needle retracts into the lancet straight away.

How early can I test?+

From about 10 days after conception. A urine test usually becomes reliable about a week after a missed period; the hormone reaches the blood first.

Do I need to test in the morning?+

No. Unlike a urine test, the result does not depend on how concentrated your urine is or how much you drank. Test at any time of day.

I recently gave birth or had a miscarriage. Can I use it?+

Not within 8 weeks. hCG from the previous pregnancy can still be present and give a false positive.

The second line is very faint. Am I pregnant?+

A faint T line counts as a positive result, as long as you read it between 5 and 10 minutes. Do not interpret a line that appears later.

What if I cannot get enough blood?+

Massage the finger gently from its base towards the tip, with a light squeeze-and-release motion, until a large drop forms. Then fill the pipette to the line. Every kit has a spare lancet and pipette for a second attempt.

The lancet did nothing when I pressed it+

A lancet works only once. If the grey protective cap was pulled off by force instead of twisted, the lancet may already have been triggered. Take the spare lancet, give the cap a quarter turn, keep turning until it comes away, then press the lancet firmly against the side of the fingertip and press the trigger button.

Why did I get an invalid result?+

The most common causes are an incorrect amount of blood, adding the diluent before the blood was absorbed, or a test device that was exposed to moisture before use. A test device can be used only once, so repeat with a new test: fill the pipette to the line, wait 30 to 40 seconds, then add four drops. Write to us and we replace the test.

How do I dispose of the lancet?+

The needle retracts into the lancet body after use, so all components can go in household waste. If your pharmacy collects sharps separately, use that; it is the tidier option.
